Lester Crawford, Toni Hoover, and James Greenwood To Keynote New York Biotechnology Association’s 17th Annual Meeting

 

NEW YORK, NY (March 31, 2008) -- New York Biotechnology Association (NYBA), the voice of New York State’s biotechnology industry, announced today that Dr. Lester M. Crawford, former FDA Commissioner; Toni Hoover, PhD, Senior Vice President and Director for Pfizer Global Research and Development; and James C. Greenwood, President and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), will be the featured keynote speakers during its 17th Annual Meeting, May 19-20, at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.  

Under the banner of “The Cures Start Here®,” more than 600 executives, investors, entrepreneurs, policy makers, scientists, researchers, and journalists will be in attendance for this year’s meeting, the largest regional biotech event of its kind.  The program will feature:
 
•    Two pre-conference workshops on Sunday, May 18 —“Women in Biotechnology” and “Regulatory and Policy Affairs”;
•    Three stellar keynote speakers: Lester Crawford, Toni Hoover and James Greenwood;
•    36 informative panels with expanded content covering the breadth and depth of the biotechnology industry and its future; and
•    An all-new Gala Dinner honoring Stephen Sands, Managing Director, Lazard Fréres & Co, on Monday, May 19.

At NYBA’s 17th Annual Meeting, attendees will:
 
•     Learn about the latest advances in bioscience and technology driving the industry;
•     Explore the hottest trends and issues in bioscience, business and technology;
•     Uncover key strategies for financing, marketing and growing biotech businesses;
•     Gain insight and competitive advantage from bio-industry veterans; and
•     Learn how the biotech industry is impacting and revitalizing the New York economy.

Our keynote speakers will bring unique depth and breadth of experience in biotechnology and biomedical research and development to the important task at hand.”
 
Dr. Lester M. Crawford formerly served as Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.  Dr. Crawford also served as Administrator of the Food Safety and Inspection Service at the US Department of Agriculture (1987-1991) and he is a Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in the United Kingdom, and a Fellow of the International Society of Food Science and Technology.  Dr. Crawford will give the Opening Keynote on Monday, May 19.

Toni Hoover, PhD, Senior Vice President and Director for Pfizer Global Research and Development (PGRD) Groton/New London Laboratories, is the senior leader responsible for creating the environment necessary to achieve Pfizer’s mission of discovering and developing new medications to meet unmet medical needs.  Dr. Hoover joined Pfizer in 2000 as Worldwide Portfolio Lead and Vice President of Global Project Management, providing key leadership in drug development activities for projects in the Neuroscience, Inflammation, and Metabolic Diseases.  Dr. Hoover received the YMCA’s Black Achiever in Industry Award in 2004 and in 2007, and The Wall Street Journal has named her one of the “Top 50 Women to Watch.”  Dr. Hoover will present the Luncheon Keynote on Monday, May 19.

James C. Greenwood is President and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) in Washington, DC, which represents more than 1,150 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across the United States and in more than 30 other nations. Mr. Greenwood represented Pennsylvania\\\'s Eighth District in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 1993 through January 2005.  Mr. Greenwood will present the Morning Keynote on Tuesday, May 20.

Dr. Tinker added, "The NYBA Annual Meeting is the largest and most important gathering of New York\\\'s biotech community and the must-attend event of the year for anyone interested in the success of biotech in the region."
