Federal

Small Business Administration - SBIR/STTR

  • Research grants for embryonic projects with commercial potential. There are 3 awards phases.
    • Phase I - To establish the technical merit and feasibility of proposed R&D efforts
    • Phase II - A continuation of successful phase I efforts.
    • Phase III - follow on non-SBIR/STTR awards to fund the commercialization of technologies resulting from Phase I/II SBIR/STTR R&D activities
    • A fast-track combined Phase I/II application process is also available


     
  • Important differences between SBIR and STTR

      SBIR STTR
    Phase I $100K for 6 months $100K / 12 months
    Phase II $750K for 2 years $500K for 2 years
    Academic partner Allowed Required
    PI Employment by business by business or academia


     
  • Grant applications are reviewed and awards are made independently by 10 different government agencies. Note that each agency puts out a list of solicitation topics of interest. There are slight differences in rules for each agency.

    Small Business Technology Investment Fund (SBTIF):NYSTAR

    • State operated venture fund that provides capital for start-up high technology companies. Investments range from $50K to $500K with a 3:1 match required from other sources. Investments are made in companies that have demonstrated proof-of-concept.
